Innovating Next-Generation Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors

Technology

Nuqleon's 150 MWe LFR-SMR is a next-generation nuclear reactor utilizing lead coolant for high energy-conversion efficiency, large safety margins and long operational lifespan with no onsite refueling.

The NQ150 reactor consists of three factory manufactured modules: The Core Capsule, the Core Module and the Steam-Generators Module. These modules are to be shipped to the power plant site and installed in an underground silo for enhanced safety and security.

The lead coolant is designed to transfer the fission energy released in the core to heat, in the steam generators, 180 bars water to 500oC steam that is to drive a turbo-generator that is to convert the heat into electricity at a net efficiency of ~42%.

Unlike conventional reactors that rely on frequent replacement of fuel assemblies, the NQ150 features a sealed core that is fueled in the factory and operates for up to 10 effective full-power years (EFPY) without access to the fuel.

The 10 EFPY limit to the core life is due to radiation damage on, primarily, the fuel rods cladding. However, with the expected development of improved structural materials and fuels, it might be possible to extend the core’s life to up to 20 years without refueling, offering improved economics and exceptionally high availability.
